GPS quality matters more than the brand

encirkl runs on virtually any Android phone since 2016 — but how precisely your loop gets tracked depends heavily on the GPS chip, especially in Berlin's dense Altbau neighborhoods with tall building fronts. A few pointers:

  • Dual-frequency GNSS (L1+L5) — built into most mid-range and flagship devices since around 2020, noticeably fewer outliers between building facades. Examples: Google Pixel 6 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Xiaomi/Poco X6 Pro and newer, OnePlus 9 and newer.
  • Very budget entry-level devices (under roughly €150) often only have single-frequency GPS — it works, but is somewhat less precise in narrow street canyons.
  • Fairphone (4 / 5) — repairable, designed in Amsterdam, solid GPS hardware. A good fit if sustainable hardware matters to you.
  • GrapheneOS on Pixel hardware — GPS tracking itself runs natively without Google services. For badges in Google Wallet you'll additionally need Google Play Services enabled in a (sandboxed) profile.

  2. Tap "Install"
  3. Allow GPS permission on first launch
  4. Pick a loop, head out

iPhone

TestFlight Beta

Publicly accessible beta via TestFlight — Apple's official tool for testing apps before their App Store release. The official App Store release will follow.

Requirements

  • iOS 16 or newer
  • iPhone 8 or newer (recommended: iPhone 11 and up)
  • Apple TestFlight app installed first
  • ~40 MB free storage

Install via TestFlight — step by step

  1. Get Apple TestFlight from the App Store — it's free, official from Apple, and only needed once (if not already installed on your iPhone)
  2. Tap "Open TestFlight" below — the link opens the TestFlight app directly with the encirkl invite
  3. In TestFlight, tap "Accept" to join the beta
  4. Tap "Install" — encirkl downloads like a regular app onto your iPhone
  5. Open the app and allow GPS access on first launch — it's only used during an active loop to validate your route
  6. Pick your first loop and head out

As a beta tester you'll get occasional new builds and can send feedback right from the TestFlight app. Once encirkl ships on the official App Store, you'll switch to the full version seamlessly.

Download on the App Store Open TestFlight

Both buttons lead to the same place: the App Store button first installs the TestFlight app (if not already on your iPhone) — right after that, the encirkl beta loads automatically from TestFlight. If TestFlight is already installed, "Open TestFlight" takes you straight to the encirkl invite.

After install

Your first loop.

Open the app, pick your neighborhood, choose a loop. A badge lands on your Wallet card the moment you close the loop. Perks at cafés and shops along the way arrive once the first local partners come on board.
